Growing up in South Africa, S'manga Khumalo saw his first horse when he was 14. This July, he became the first black jockey to win the Vodacom Durban July, Africa's biggest ~ and richest ~ horse race. "As I came to the number one box down at the grandstand, my mum was there in front," he recalls.
