forest in Wapichan territory © Nicolas Fredericks |
Several years ago, at the age of 19, my son went to Washington, DC. After four days of talking with his representatives and others about the environment, he returned, convinced that change was not going to happen there, that it was only at the grassroots level that real change would start. A recent report from the World Resources Institute and the Rights and Resources Initiative seems to back up that contention. Its review of more than 130 studies in 14 countries shows that most local communities take better care of their environment ~ in this case, forests ~ than governments do: http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg22329802.900-local-people-preserve-the-environment-better-than-governments.html#.U98U90i5bgc
