The Fabric of Her Life

Annnd, once again, the obits provide a fascinating biography of a most interesting individual, in this case, one Ruth Benerito (this is the correct spelling of her last name; I looked it up). Not only did this woman earn a Ph.D. in physical chemistry at a time when not many of her gender were seeking advanced degrees or frequenting the halls of that particular department, but she and her team came up with what the New York Times called "one of the most significant technological developments of the 20th century." No matter what you may think of the aesthetic qualities of wrinkle-free cotton, you have to admit that its invention made a big difference to a whole lot of people (story, video): http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2013/10/the-woman-who-changed-americas-social-fabric-with-actual-fabric/280363/
