When I was in high school, I was lucky enough to be able to spend a couple of weeks in a tiny village at the top of a steep hill in the Alpes-Maritimes, in southern France. My mother had rented a restored old stone barn (I believe it was called Le Bercail) at the edge of town. It was amazing: stone floors and walls, great old wood beams in the ceiling. It had modern conveniences but retained all of its original rough-hewn charm. The Europeans are good at that.
Here is another such building, also in France, lovingly and respectfully restored. Just try not to drool over its beauty and perfection ~ just try! (story, slideshow):
