Archaeologists have uncovered a cave in an ancient city in southwestern Turkey that could have once been thought to be the gateway to Hades. They also found the remains of a temple and pool that would have been used by pilgrims to the site. The cave's air [pun intended] of eeriness and danger was heightened by the toxic gases that emanated from it. “We could see the cave's lethal properties during the excavation," says team member Francesco D'Andria, of the University of Salento.
