Thoughts Alone

"You don't really think about anything," explains Martin Pistorius of the 12 years he spent in a coma starting when he was 12 years old. "You simply exist. It's a very dark place to find yourself because, in a sense, you are allowing yourself to vanish." A couple of years into his vegetative state, he says, he began to wake up, but he couldn't move and no one noticed. Finally, he made the decision to prove that he existed, and it seems that that decision affected his body. Now 39, he is married, graduated from college with a degree in computer science, and has written a book about his experience (story, slideshow, video): http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2909397/I-began-wake-man-spent-12-years-trapped-comatose-state-brought-mystery-illness-watching-endless-reruns-Barney-mind-switched-on.html
