The Battle of Gettysburg took place July 1-3, 1863 ~ 150 years ago. Today, we remember it as much for President Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, delivered at that site on Nov. 19, 1863, as for its carnage and tragedy. It was the bloodiest battle of the Civil War. It is also one of the most reenacted battles, and this year those who take part feel its reality even more keenly: http://www.nbcnews.com/travel/guide-gettysburg-150-sights-sounds-yes-apps-6C10472871
It's not just Americans who take part in the reenactments (video): http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/23122708
Gettysburg wasn't the only crucial battle to take place that year. There was also the Siege of Vicksburg ~ not as well known, perhaps, but it was, in Lincoln's words, "the key" (animation): http://www.historyanimated.com/VicksburgAnimation.html
