The Internet Never Forgets

the House of Mr. H                                   Michael Gakuran
Well, hardly ever. There's a saying ~ You can't go home again ~ that seems to apply pretty well to the online sites of one's youth. What happens to the worlds created in the ether when their site is shut down? Some have been permanently removed, but more and more are being saved. “When we founded Archive Team, it was in a dearth of recognition that these communities had lasting historical and societal value,” Internet advocate Jason Scott explains. “They were considered to be byproducts, like a street corner ~ thinking of it as the point where two streets collide, rather than being a hangout that when removed, removes the entire community”: http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2014/07/what-happens-when-digital-cities-are-abandoned/373941/
Just like those who enjoy exploring ghost towns or abandoned malls, there are those who troll the Internet for abandoned virtual communities. Gakuranman's tales of adventure through forgotten sites are well illustrated and make for fascinating reading: http://gakuran.com/category/haikyo-ruins/
