Human Rights Day ~ Dec. 10

Eleanor Roosevelt Bettmann/CORBIS
In 1950, the General Assembly of the United Nations declared December 10 to be Human Rights Day around the world, to bring attention to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was adopted by the UN on Dec. 10, 1948, at the instigation of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, among others. This year also marks the 20th anniversary of the creation of the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (an interactive timeline of which can be seen at http://at20.ohchr.org/timeline.html) and the 10th of the Vienna Declaration and Plan of Action. The first article of the Declaration of Human Rights reads, "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are
endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood" (video): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTlrSYbCbHE
Imagine. Imagine a world in which the dignity of all sentient creatures is taken seriously and respected. While we, the people of the Earth, have made some progress in this sphere, there is so, so much left to be done (column, video): http://www.huffingtonpost.com/martin-lewis/what-a-day-for-a-daydream_b_4414907.html
