It all started when Ron Finley of South Los Angeles (aka South Central) decided to plant fruit trees and vegetables on the sliver of city-owned land between the sidewalk in front of his house and the street and the city responded with a warrant. Finley didn't let that stop him. Now, he says, "I beautify lawns, parkways. ... I have witnessed my garden become a tool ... for the transformation of my neighborhood." He is passionate, has high goals, and is eminently quotable: "Gardening is the most therapeutic and defiant act you can do," he says, "especially in the inner city. Plus, you get strawberries" (video):
