They Walk Alone

"Everyone always hopes their baby will be really smart, but I'm seeing now that that's not such a great thing." Not the kind of musing one wants to hear from one's child's third-grade teacher. And yet, that's exactly what my son's teacher said when I told her of my concern that he was becoming withdrawn and had said that no one was interested in the things he was interested in (like the planets, deep space, other countries, geology, ancient history). In one way, the teacher was right. In a society that distrusts differences, a talented child and that child's parents can feel very alone: http://www.creativitypost.com/psychology/the_burdens_of_talent
