Coming Clean

The tale of how antibacterial-soap ingredient triclosan became so ubiquitous without ever being tested by the FDA is but one of many such stories. Many chemical ingredients in household products sold in the U.S. have not been formally approved by the agency. And as far as triclosan is concerned, "To me," says Allison Aiello, a professor at the University of Michigan's School of Public Health, "it looks like the risks outweigh any benefit associated with these products right now.
