"It's not education, it's torture," says Laurel Sturt, author of Davonte's Inferno: Ten Years in the New York Public School Gulag (where, I'm guessing, "Davonte" is the name of one of her students). After a decade in a school in "a very poor neighborhood," she came to feel that the only place where one can start in order to hope to make any lasting difference is at the very beginning.
