A Life of Deception

Philby in Russia, 1968, five years after he defected  Daily Mail/Rex Features
"On the night of 23 January 1963, during a fierce rainstorm, Philby walked down the five flights of stairs from the flat he shared with Eleanor Brewer, the former wife of the New York Times Middle East correspondent, Sam Brewer, and disappeared." In the world of spies, British double agent Kim Philby (1912-1988) has to be one of the most fascinating ~ and not in a particularly good way. This is a wonderfully well-written "Diary" entry by writer and former BBC correspondent Tom Carver about his travels in the spy's footsteps. The line above is from his first paragraph: http://www.lrb.co.uk/v34/n19/tom-carver/diary
