Defending Anne Hathaway

OK. I'm not usually very much interested in Hollywood and its little intrigues, but when a friend mentioned to me the other day that a lot of people really dislike the actress Anne Hathaway, I wondered two things: 1. Is that true? and 2. If so, why? She's a good actor, is well-spoken, composed, lovely, intelligent, and seems to be a truly good person. In this article in Vanity Fair, she is compared to Jennifer Lawrence, who is the It girl of the moment. Lawrence is cute, also a good actor, seems to be a good person, and is funny in a very direct, acerbic sort of way, which is always fun. There are clips of them both answering reporters' questions after the Academy Awards show. What's interesting to me is that, while the audience laughed at Lawrence's humor, there was total silence when Hathaway joked around.
So, the answer to question-to-self number 1 is Yes. The answer to question 2, IMHO, is that the reason one seems to be so preferred over the other is much the same as the reason Bush II was preferred over Al Gore. The American public has trouble with sophistication. They find it threatening. Where Lawrence, much like ~ oh, hell, what's her name? Ah! ~ Carmen Diaz, comes off like the pretty girl you can relax and have a beer with on the back stoop, Hathaway is more (dare I say it?) cultured. She is definitely reminiscent of Audrey Hepburn, who had the fortune of living in a time when standards were higher and people with aspirations were not denigrated for them. This, of course, is also the reason our schools are in trouble and won't get any better no matter how much lip service we pay them, but that's another story: http://www.vanityfair.com/online/oscars/2013/02/jennifer-lawrence-anne-hathaway-awards-season-likeability
