The Martin Luther King, Jr., Memorial in Washington, D.C., is the only one on the Mall dedicated to a non-president, the only one to an African American. It was carved by Chinese artist Lei Yixin and inspired by a
line from King's 1963 “I Have a Dream” speech: “With this faith we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope.”
