In 1960, French photographer Marc Garanger, a draftee in Algeria, was ordered to take identity-card pictures of the women who had been taken to so-called regroupment villages after their home villages had been razed. “They would be unveiled. In a period of ten days, I made two thousand portraits, two hundred a day," he remembers. "The women had no choice in the matter.
